About: QPSU Services

We are the QPSU, an organisation of over 30,000 Queensland workers striving to improve our working lives. Being part of the QPSU means you have access to advice, representation, and many useful services.
Being QPSU means:
- Getting advice and information from our union website, journal, email, newsletters, phone contact and more.
- Improving your workplace through campaigns and action;
- Access to representation from our workplace delegate network and trained union staff;
- Having your say in the plans and management of our union;
- Receiving many ancillary benefits, like discount legal services and Union Shopper.
Advice and information
An important part of being a union member is staying informed. That's why the QPSU office provides frequent communications with members, as well as a useful website at www.qpsu.org.au.
Information and advice is available in many different forms. Your local workplace delegate can often help you find the answers to common questions. The QPSU office makes phone contact with members at home, allowing them to stay informed about important activity in their local area. Members receive regular electronic updates via Umail, and via the official journal of the QPSU, Public Sector Voice, mailed free to all members.
If you have a query or need specific information, as well as checking our website, you can phone 1800 177 244 or email members@qpsu.org.
Improving our working lives
In the public service, there are many different things we would like to have in our job. Whether it's more employment security for temporary workers, fair opportunities for progression and promotion; family friendly working hours, we can achieve improvements by working together.
For over 100 years, QPSU members have come together to make their workplaces better. Union campaigns and activity are the most important ways to make this happen.
One way of securing better workplaces is through campaigning for a collective agreement, or EB agreement, with our departments. These agreements guarantee things like fair pay, good career structures, working hours, and many other matters. To find out more about the conditions that are guaranteed in your department, visit the QPSU website, www.qpsu.org.au.

Pushing for improvements doesn't have to be limited to our local workplaces either. QPSU members who are concerned about building a better future are focused on Queensland's climate, through the Climate Heroes program. This campaign, with the support of prominent conservation groups, has helped members make their workplaces more sustainable. For more, see www.qpsu.org.au/climate.
Representation
Whenever you have a dispute at work, you can get advice from your local workplace delegates or from union office staff.
QPSU delegates exist in most workplaces where they are union members. They exist to help provide information and advice to members, help maintain communications between workers, and discuss with management ways to improve local working conditions. Your local delegate should be your first point of contact if you have questions or suggestions about your working conditions.
You can contact QPSU staff by calling 1800 177 244. Over the course of one phone call, you can gain advice and support. Where appropriate, union staff can support and represent you during grievance or disciplinary procedures, WorkCover applications, and all other workplace issues.
Have your say
The QPSU is a democratic organisation and all members are encouraged to have their say. Union members decide what will become a part of their collective agreement claims, and whether to accept or reject any collective agreement offered by the employer.

Members also can help develop QPSU policy on specific issues, such as climate change, health and safety, women's issues, and work/life balance. There are many ways of becoming involved in these efforts. Please email members@qpsu.org.au if you are interested in becoming involved in policy development.
Most formally, all financial members can vote for and nominate as representatives to Union Council, the QPSU's highest decision-making body. Every area of the union is represented by Council.
QPSU delegate training
Every workplace needs a delegate. To become a QPSU delegate or workplace representative, you will receive all the training you need from the union office. Call 1800 177 244 or visit www.qpsu.org.au/delegates to check when the next training session for delegates is scheduled.
Union Shopper
Union Shopper is the special discount service available free for all union members. Whether you're looking for a car, a new fridge, a holiday, or a great deal on anything, be sure you check with Union Shopper first. Visit them at www.unionshopper.com.au or call 1300 368 117.
Legal Assistance
Professional indemnity insurance is available to custodial corrections officers, health professionals, and therapists working in other government departments. To learn more about professional indemnity insurance, contact the union office for an information booklet.
The QPSU also has an arrangement with three separate law firms that provides members with discounted or free legal services, such as free initial consultations. Contact the union office for more information about legal services.

A mortality benefit is also available to friends and families of QPSU members. Contact the union office in the event of a bereavement.
