Unions win
Unions have been improving the working lives of Australians for over one hundred years.
In recent years union members have won annual wage rises of 4%, recognition for qualifications, more rights for temporary workers, improvements to paid parental leave and many other things. Without unions workers would not have paid annual leave, sick leave or long service leave.

Stronger together
Union members continue to have better wages and conditions because by working together we have more strength than we have as individual workers. Union members work together on many campaigns some to protect their jobs, some to improve their working lives, some to protect the environment by changing to greener workplace practices or lobbying the government about better laws to protect workers and our future.
Unions have won the right to have some improvements included in collective agreements which are legally enforceable.
These are the sort of agreements which include wage rates. These agreements are known as collective agreements. These agreements are normally negotiated every three years.
Campaigning
If negotiations fail to reach an agreement union members have the right to campaign for a better outcome.

These campaigns are designed to pressure the employer into agreeing to parts of the union members claim.
Campaigns by the QPSU can involve collective action by members: wearing stickers; signing petitions; having marches or demonstrations of people in public spaces; TV and radio advertising; asking community groups to lobby the government on our behalf; and asking members of the public to support members by signing petitions or by sending postcards to Ministers.
The more members involved in the campaign, the more likely the employer is to give union members what they want.
