mission two: climate science

Earth Hour 2008 was a great success – an example of the way that small, simple changes can add up to have big effects!

In south-east Queensland, we reduced our energy consumption by 12.4% over the hour and 58% of all adults in major centres participated.

This is a great first step, but it will take much longer-term action from all of us, and from our nation’s leaders, to ensure that our children have a safe and prosperous future climate.

Each Australian can commit to permanently cut their personal climate impact by 30% - cutting both greenhouse pollution and our electricity bills.

We can do this in our workplaces, in our homes, and we can encourage our wider communities to do the same. Together, our simple actions become even stronger.

To help you with these actions, in this kit we’ve included:

  • A pledge for you to sign and discuss with your family;
  • A fax-back form so you can register for Climate Hero training and Labour Day;
  • Invitations for your family, friends and colleagues to the local Climate Heroes launch.
Step 1: Pledge

The first part of your mission is to make a personal commitment to some small, positive changes in your daily life – by adding up a lot of small changes we can make a big difference.

The big difference that our country needs to make, by the year 2020, is a 30% reduction in emissions, and you can start today to be a part of this positive change.

Read and complete the pledge in this Hero Kit and stick on the fridge or in another prominent place, at work or at home. Talk about it with your family or workmates during mealtimes.

The first step that you take on the journey to sustainability is often the hardest, but it is the most important.

More pledges will be supplied at Hero Training, to distribute to your workmates, family and friends.

Step 2: Hero Training

Even Superman had to go to hero-school!

At QPSU, we want to make sure that wonderful Climate Heroes like you feel supported, prepared and confident to achieve your missions.

That’s why we are holding a round of Hero Training Days and local launch events all around Queensland, from the 14th to the 24th of April.

  • Cairns 28 April
  • Townsville 29 April
  • Mackay 30 April
  • Toowoomba 23 April
  • Brisbane x 2 21 & 24 April
  • Gold Coast 22 April
  • Sunshine Coast TBA

At these sessions, we will be providing Powerpoint and/or DVD materials on climate change science, skills training, and info sessions with a climate change campaigner from ACF to answer all your questions.

We’ll also discuss the results of your workplace’s preliminary assessment surveys from the last mission.

Ideally every Climate Hero should attend a training session in person. If for some reason you can’t get to a training afternoon, we will send you a full training pack, and a member of Team Hero will go through it with you over the phone.

Step 3: Hero Launch Invites

In the evening after training we will have nibbles, drinks, activities and a fun, short presentation to celebrate the local launch of Climate Heroes.

All your family, friends, and colleagues are invited – please distribute the invitations, send emails out, and let us know how many are coming!

Step 4: Labour Day

At Labour Day rallies across Queensland, the QPSU Climate Heroes team will be out in force, with pledges and climate science information from the ACF.

You can be a part of the excitement on the day – helping to raise awareness of Climate Change among other unionists in a fun and relaxed environment.

Please RSVP for Labour Day, and the Hero Training Days, at www.qpsu.org.au/climate, by emailing climate@qpsu.org.au, or by completing the fax-back form.

Queries and concerns

Don’t forget, if you have any queries or suggestions, email climate@qpsu.org.au or call 1800 177 244.

Good luck with your pledges and see you at training!
