Global climate fight gains strength

Fighting climate change requires global effort from all countries.

And, as we've discovered, global leadership requires global public pressure.

That's why it's so heartening to see a surge for action from ordinary citizens in the United States.

In that country, a massive "people power" push has begun, with the aim of making its electricity industry 100% green and renewable in 10 years.

That's a big challenge: but it's achievable, and necessary.

Even though the US is bigger than Australia, our two countries have much in common: for example, we're both in the top three highest per capita emitters of carbon in the developed world.

And working families in both our countries are suffering as they face rising fuel costs.

For us, the biggest source of carbon emissions is coal. For the United States, it's oil.

But the principle for both our countries is the same: as rich, highly industrialised economies heavily reliant on fossil fuels, we need to kick our carbon addiction, both for our long-term economic good and for the health of our planet.

In this video leading climate change campaigner and Nobel laureate Al Gore sets out a clear and inspiring plan for a new, green future.

Please watch this short video and send it to your friends and workmates - so that we, the people, can continue come together across the globe to secure our prosperity.
