The strength and effectiveness of the QPSU is built on a network of active workplace delegates.  Our delegates are ordinary QPSU members who have volunteered to make an extraordinary contribution to their workplace.

As a workplace delegate your role is the most important one that a union member can have. A workplace delegate is often the first contact that members or potential members have with the Union when they need information or assistance.

Delegates don’t need to know all the answers. In most cases a delegate’s role to provide information to members, and to try to assist them.  Typically this will involve knowing the right people to talk to, and the right questions to be asking.

Fundamental to the work of our delegates is an absolute commitment to helping your fellow workers.  There are elements of the role that will come with experience and confidence.  Training, assistance and support is available to delegates from the network of other delegates and from officials in the Union.  You cannot be expected to have all the answers straight away. Indeed many of the problems you will encounter will rarely have one simple solution.

If you feel that you need training on any issue let the Unions’ Staff know and training can be arranged. The Union’s Staff are always available to help.

An effective delegate’s role includes the following activities: -

1. Recruiting and maintaining membership
2. Communicating with members
3. Communicating with the Union Office
4. Helping members
5. Being informed about entitlements and current campaigns
6. Encouraging involvement in the Union
7. Representing members on workplace committees
8. Keeping:
----- Membership lists and print-outs of financial status
----- Membership application forms and general recruitment literature
----- Pay Roll Deduction forms
----- Spare copies of recent journals and bulletins, the Rule Book, Policy Manual, and Delegate’s Manual.
