Springborg’s cuts to Health will mean thousands of jobsLawrence Springborg has no idea how to run Queensland Health, since he plans to slash $1.5 billion from its budget, QPSU General Secretary Alex Scott said.
“Lawrence Springborg wants to rip $766 million from Queensland Health just to pay for his election promises. To balance the budget in four years as he has promised will require another $744 million out of Queensland Health. The job cuts involved would be an utter disaster”, Mr Scott said.
“Surely even Mr Springborg realises that Queensland Health doesn’t run for free. To cut $1.5 billion out of Health, jobs have to go”, he said.
Yesterday Mr Springborg said that after his planned $3 billion cut to the public sector, he would have a spare ‘several hundred million’ to balance the state budget. Analysis has revealed this assertion is false.

“Lawrence Springborg is totally wrong when he says paying off the state deficit will not involve additional funding cuts to departments”, Mr Scott said.
“He is wrong to the tune of $2.9 billion. In Health alone, the additional cuts required to balance the budget for a single year are $744 million”, he said.
“Lawrence Springborg’s inability to do the sums is putting thousands of Queensland Health jobs at risk, not to mention the lives of Queensland Health patients”, Mr Scott said.
