Online campaign gaining momentum – Facebook group to buy Springborg a calculator

Having already bought Lawrence Springborg a dictionary to avoid the
use of made-up words, a Facebook group has renamed itself around a new fundraising cause – “Let’s buy Lawrence Springborg a calculator”.

It’s a cheeky reference to the $2.1 billion hole in his election promises, which will be underfunded unless he cuts thousands of public sector jobs.

The Facebook cause is just one of several online initiatives kick started by the Queensland Public Sector Union this election following the LNP Leader’s commitment to make some public sector workers “de-necessary”.

They include:

  • De-necessary.com – a website featuring photos and captions submitted by real Queenslanders who provide important public services, explaining why they are indeed very necessary.
  • StopSpringborg.com – a tug-o-war flash game, which has been played thousands of times, pitting average citizens against Mr Springborg in a “fight for jobs”.
  • A twitter account – twitter.com/stopspringborg;
  • A place for supporters to fundraise to put an ad on air emphasising the pro-jobs message.

The online campaign is now going offline – the television ad funded
through web contributions is due to air next week, and real-life
tug-of-wars have been taking place on footpaths around the Brisbane
CBD.

The group’s famous giant Borg Head has taken on a life of its own, making frequent media appearances, even one alongside his real-life counterpart.

QPSU General Secretary Alex Scott said that online campaigning was an important way for union members to spread the message about jobs among themselves and their friends.

“The online world is an important organising tool for unions.  Particularly when it concerns an issue as important as the future of thousands of public sector jobs”, Mr Scott said.
